2017 Provincial Mixed Foursomes Round-Up

P.P.U.I. - 19/05/2017 - Report on Proceedings in both provinces

2017 Leinster Mixed Foursomes

2017 Munster Mixed Foursomes

13UP proved to be the lucky number in both today’s Provincial Mixed Foursomes events as Communications and Press Officer Jason O’Connor rounds up the day’s proceedings in both Royal Meath and Lakewood.

Leinster

A three shot victory for St Bridgets Catherine and Ian Dillon in Clonee as they were the clear winners at the end of the 36 holes. Rounds of 7up and 6up gave the St Bridgets duo their win in the Shotgun Start format as Maureen and Kevin Clarke of Kilbeggan proved to be their nearest challengers. Rounds of 4up and 6up gave the Westmeath pair second place on countback (Back 18) as Cathy Richardson and Thomas Costello of Bellewstown also finished on 10up. A 6up first round for the Meath pair was good enough to give them the First 18 prize ahead of McBride’s Audrey Donnelly and Padraic Sarsfield on the Back Nine.

Richardson and Costello were also in contention for the Gross prize which also came down to countback but Darren Keogh and Chrissie Byrne of Ryston managed to retain their prize with a similar 9up score and a better Back 18. The other prize on the day, the Second 18, was another that needed countback to decide the winner and in the end it went to the host club as Theresa Fagan and Sean Kelly from the host club’s 6up had a better Back Nine that that of Tullamore’s Margaret Hogan and John Fleming who also had 6up for their second round.

Munster

A Cork victory in Lakewood that saw Collins duo Vera McCarthy and Jim Ahern lead from start-to-finish as rounds of 8up and 5up were good enough for them to hold off a late challenge from last year’s runners-up by a single shot. 2014 winners Lisa O’Connor and Tony Blake of Tralee finished with rounds of 5up and 7up for a 12up score just one short of a second title. Vera and Jim’s Gross score was 6up but the actual Gross prize went to Rocklodge’s Mary Murray and John Tracey with 4up as they just piped local duo Eileen Murphy and Bart Millard for the prize on countback with a better Back 18.

The two 18 prizes went to Tipperary and more specifically North Tipperary as Lakeside’s Josie McCormack and Anthony Maher had 6up to claim the first 18 prize while a brilliant second round of 9up from Riverdale’s Margaret Forde and Seamus Gleeson gave them the second 18 prize ahead of St Stephens Mairead Manning and Dave Towler with 8up. The latter had 11up in total, the third best nett score of the day but incredibly one that was not good enough to win any prize on offer.
