Munster U-16 Matchplay Final Day

P.P.U.I. - 25/06/2017 - Semi-Finals & Final in St Annes from 10.30am

THE Munster U-16 Matchplay Cup will be staying in St Annes but there is a new name of the Cup after Cian Murphy succeeded club-mate Glenn Towler in emerging victorious today after a long weekend of play at the Shanakiel venue. He won a grand total of seven matches over both Saturday and Sunday as he got the better of Dylan Seymour from Fermoy in a decider he always seemed to be in control of.

Cian was dominant in the early stages of the decider with Dylan, a 2up lead after three holes becoming a 5up lead after nine before Dylan brought the gap back to 4 after the first 18 holes which included a Hole-in-One at the 14th hole. Dylan fought back to three behind after 24 holes but Cian was back in front by four with nine to play. Both players traded hole wins on the 11th & 12th holes but the deciding hole was the 13th which Dylan bogeyed to give Cian his eventual 5&4 win.

The earlier Semi-Finals had seen both players overcome Parteen duo Patrick Mitchell and Shea Fennell to reach the decider. Dylan needed a great pitch to the first playoff hole to defeat Patrick after leading by 4up after 24 holes. Dylan had led by 1up after the first 18 before starting the second round strongly but Patrick was level by the 14th and won the 17th to take the lead over Dylan. The Fermoy player held his nerve however to force sudden death and a great tee-shot to the first hole third time around gave him his place in the Final. Cian never trailed in his Semi-Final with Shea Fennell however the Parteen player did his best to stay with the host club player after Cian went into a 5up lead after 13 holes. The gap was back to four turning before Shea won the first and second holes turning to reduce the deficit to two.

Cian was back 4up after 23 holes however and though Shea reduced the deficit to two twice more Cian birdied the 15th to go 3up and he halved the 16th to secure his place in the decider.
