Munster U-16 Matchplay Championships Day Two
P.P.U.I. - 07/07/2019 - Glenn Towler wins Championship, Bobby McCarron wins the Plate
Communications & Press Officer Jason O’Connor reports on today’s conclusion to the Munster U-16 Matchplay Championships in St Annes where both deciders ended up being one club affairs!
FIVE years after he contested his first Munster Matchplay Final against his brother Ryan, Glenn Towler today competed in his third provincial decider and won a second title following his initial win in Deerpark in 2016. Cillian Courtney was his opponent in the Semi-Finals this morning like he was in the decider of three years ago as Glenn pretty much led from start to finish.
1up at both the nine and 18 hole mark, there was still just one between them ahead of the closing nine holes before Glenn pushed on for a 3&2 win. His new St Annes club-mate Patrick Mitchell would be his opponent in the decider after the Clare native held off a strong challenge from Listowel’s Jake Shine at the last hole. Patrick had led 1up after nine holes but Jake managed to reverse it to a 1up lead for himself at the halfway stage but Patrick reassumed the same lead with nine left as Jake missed a long range putt on the last to force sudden death.
The final between Glenn and Patrick was tight until the closing stages, level after nine holes before Glenn went 1up after 18 holes. The advantage would be two with nine to play but Glenn finished strongly in going on to record a 5&4 win for his second title ensured the title would be St Annes for the fourth time in six years to go with not only his own double and brother Ryan’s win but also Cian Murphy’s success back in 2017.
THERE was a Kerry winner guaranteed in advance of this morning’s Semi-Finals with two Deerpark vs. Listowel encounters, however it remained to be seen would it be a third such encounter or an all club affair. It turned out to be a Listowel affair after Bobby McCarron and Jayden Chute won the two Semi-Finals against Noah Sexton and TJ O’Sullivan respectively. Bobby went into an early 2up lead on Noah after he first nine holes before leading 3up at the halfway stage.
Noah did fight back to trail by two with nine holes left but Bobby made sure of it at penultimate 35th hole for a 3&1 win. Jayden led TJ early on 1up before both players were level after the first 18 holes. Jayden regained a 1up lead with nine to play as he had three further hole wins in an eventual 4&3 victory. The final saw Bobby lead pretty much from start to finish, 2up on Jayden after nine holes before holding the same advantage after the first 18.
Bobby extended his lead to 3up with nine to play and a 3&2 victory it was for him eventually over Jayden as Bobby followed his father Kevin in winning a Munster Singles competition, 26 years after Kevin won the 1993 Munster Senior Gents Strokeplay in Ashgrove, Waterford.
