Second Mixed Foursomes Success for Catherine McCreevy

P.P.U.I. - 01/10/2014 - The Navan player reflects on her triumph alongside William Sheridan in Ringcommons

LAST Sunday saw Navan’s Catherine McCreevy claim the National Mixed Foursomes for the second time as a player as she won with Bellewstown’s William Sheridan having previously won with Ian Farrelly back in 2003. She spoke with Communications & Press Officer Jason O’Connor on this particular success in Ringcommons.

IT’S four years since Catherine McCreevy and William Sheridan first started playing together as a doubles partnership. While mainly confided to playing in Opens together last Sunday’s three shot victory in Ringcommons was their first major success together. Catherine said that her playing partner in particular was inspired by his performance in the National Seniors Strokeplay the week before. “Wally (William) was definitely confident after winning the Seniors the week before and he said to me on Saturday night that he felt we had a good chance of winning it. We played two rounds together in Ringcommons last Thursday and did a 42 and 43 so we did take good encouragement from that before the event itself,” she said.

Catherine herself was returning to the game after break of two to three years and said their opening round of 7up felt even better when they saw the other scores posted after the First 18. “We were expecting someone to have a better score than us but when we saw we were leading and that some of the other teams were struggling it really spurred us on for the second round. We didn’t get a birdie in the second round until the eighth hole but Wally was great at settling my nerves because I would generally be nervous about messing things up particularly in a situation like that where we were in front,” Catherine said. The Bellewstown player is the third different player Catherine has won a prize with in the competition having won the Gross prize with the late Frank Brady in the 1991 staging of the event in Royal Meath alongside her 2003 victory with Ian Farrelly in Stackallen.

The enjoyable, fun and laid back nature of the Mixed Foursomes format itself is one of the main attractions of Pitch & Putt for Catherine and she says last Sunday’s win has given her an appetite to take up the game fully again. “I’d certainly like to play the game at Inter-County level again and I think it’s a great time to be playing Pitch and Putt again with all the new competitions that have come in, particularly for Intermediate & Junior players.”

Certainly encouraging words for Meath Pitch & Putt as Catherine and William followed on brilliantly from the latter’s success in Gaeil Colmcille the previous weekend.

CLARIFICATION

In last week’s preview of the National Mixed Foursomes I omitted to mention the fact Denis and Dolores Monaghan of Shandon were also multiple winners of this event back in 1991 and 1994 alongside Jack and Rose McCormack of Kilbeggan and Pat and Marie Kelleher of Douglas. Dolores was also a winner of the event with Sean Harkins back in 1986 joining Mary Dore of Limerick and now Catherine McCreevy in winning the event with two different partners. I am happy to make this clarification.
