Hillview Pitch and Putt Club

Hillview was originally a tennis club. The club commenced its activities in 1939. At the time, there were 6 lawn courts in use. In 1955, PJ Bell designed the original 9 hole Pitch & Putt course.

In 1973, the old timber pavilion was demolished and was replaced in 1974, by a new clubhouse, badminton hall and bar. 

The opening of the new clubhouse coincided with a name change from Hillview Lawn Tennis and Pitch & Putt Club to Hillview ( Clonmel ) Sports Club. 

In 1978, the Pitch & Putt course was extended to include " The Bog " at the south end of the course. This area had lain fallow for many years. The chief architect of the new course was Nial O Neill who, with the support of many local volunteers, set about designing and building the extra holes, some of which are used today in the championship course.

Formation of the P.P.U.I.

Delegations from the Munster and Leinster organisations met at the Hillview club in Clonmel under the chairmanship of Ernest O'Brien Hogan, then President of Hillview and later Patron of the Union. The first meeting ended with an agreement to set-up a Joint Sub-Committee of the two organisations to draft a detailed Constitution for a united union, to look at and make recommendations on all areas of difference and to propose the arrangements by which unity could be achieved. The sub-committee's work was finished in June 1960. The first Convention of the Pitch and Putt Union of Ireland was held on Sunday 9 October 1960, in Clonmel. The Officers elected were:

• President - P. A. Murphy (Ardnacrusha)
• Vice President - Jimmy Vaughan (Ierne)
• Secretary - Capt. Larry Furlong (Lumville)
• Treasurer - J.F. Irwin (Highfield)

  It had 42 affiliated clubs - 28 in Leinster and 14 in Munster. The first set of rules which were produced in 1968.

Hillview will be host club to:

Munster Ladies Strokelpay Championships in 2016.

National Gents Strokeplay Championships in 2017.
