St. Bridget's Pitch and Putt Club
St. Bridgets Pitch and Putt Club was formed in 1987. The prime movers in establishing the club were John Archbold, Brendan Walsh and Dan Byrne (R.I.P) who were responsible for the layout and design of the first nine holes. The lands were kindly leased by local Crossand Passion Sisters to whom the club will be forever indebted.
The members of the first committee were John Archbold (Chairman), Ethna Dempsey (Vice Chairperson),John Talbot (Treasurer),Seamus Dempsy (PRO), Martin Carey,John Kenna,Eddie Carey,Betty Barker,Mary Sherry,Paddy Dowling,Tommy Lawlor,Tommy Walsh,John Talt,John Dunne,Paddy Meaney and John Reddy. In his first sectarys report Liam Sherry referring to the founders prophetically wrote ''only time will tell how much Kilcullen will owe these men''. The committee realised that an eighteen hole course was necessary and set about transforming the swampy land to achieve this goal. Fundraising began in earnest, ballad sessions, poker classics, dances ect. were organised--a lot of cold turkey and tea was consumed!! Course equipment was purchased, hedges cut, land was ditched and drained, streams cleaned, trees and shrubs planted and two precast bridges were erected over the riverto facilitate the eighteen hole course. Soon the course which was designed by Pat Doyle of Athgaran and Development Officer with Kildare and Wicklow Region, was ready to open under stewardship of Christy Sweeney, who is our current Chairman.(2012)
In 1988 the club was affiliated to the Pitch and Putt Union of Ireland. in 1991 the Championship eighteen hole course was officially opened by Aiden O'Brein, vice president of the Pitch and Putt Union of Ireland and was blessed by local parish priest Fr. Supple. A number of trees which have now matured, were planted by the officers of the Pitch and Putt Union of Ireland.
On the playinf field St. Bridget's soon reaped the reward of its juvenile policy. Players like the Byrne sisters - Margaret,Marian and Chrssie and their brothers Stephen and Padraig, the Dillon Duo - Tara and Ian, Bernadette Coffey, Jason Hannon and Cathal Dunne brought success to the club. in 1988 Margaret Byrne won the first National Title for St. Bridget's by capturing the Girls Juvenile crown. Since then seven more players have won National Titles for the club. Marion and Chrssie Byrne, Jason Hannon, Sean Harkins, Cathal Dunne,Bernadette Coffey have represented Ireland at International Level.
While the success on the playing field is good for the club and gives a sense of achievement to all members, the main purpose of any club is to provide facilities for the members to enjoy the game and get a little exercise and make new friends. Since its inception, St. Bridget's had use of part of the Community Complex as a clubhouse by kind permission of the Committee of the Community Centre. However it was felt that to foster a greater spirit of fellowship amongst its members and develop closer links with other clubs and work and support of the committee and members, the new club house was officially opened by Mervin Cooney, President of the PPUI on 20th of November 2000.
