2009 Convention Report, February 27, 2010, 6:23 pm
| An attendance of over 110 was present in the Athlone Springs Hotel this morning when Frank Smith opened the annual convention of the Pitch & Putt Union of Ireland.
After welcoming the Patrons, NEC Officers, Delegates and Observers Frank gave a short address thanking all who had assisted him in the previous three years as President and his earlier years on the NEC, Leinster Council and Dublin Co. Board.
Next came the minutes of the previous year’s AGM closely followed by extensive reports from the various Officers. Various questions from the floor were handled by individual Officers and all expressed satisfaction with the answers received. For the first year in some time we were able to report an increase in membership which in these hard times is good to see.
Just before lunch the Awards for Best Club for the 2009 year were presented with a special award given to Tipperary Hills for their phoenix like resurrection in the last year while Runner Up spot went to Portmarnock and overall Winners were Kilbeggan.
After a break for lunch Convention reconvened with the election of Officers and Members without Portfolio. All of the Officers were elected unopposed while there were six nominations for the four non Portfolio positions. The full election results are as follows.
President Myles McMorrow (Lakeside)
Vice President Dan Cronin (Kilmichael)
Hon. Secretary Michael Murphy (Old County)
Hon. Treasurer Breda Brophy (McDonagh)
Hon. Registrar Helen McMorrow (Lakeside)
Competition Sec, Timothy Ryan Jr. (St. Annes)
Coaching Development Officer Eamonn Birchall (Shandon)
Public Relations/Marketing Officer Padraig O’Shea (Douglas)
N.E.C. Members Paddy Browne (Collinstown)
Mary Farrell (Gaeil Colmcille)
Niall Reynolds (Clare Road)
Liam Sherry (St. Bridgets)
Due to the death of the late Paddy Power Patron of the PPUI a vacancy had arisen as Patron. Nominated by Frank Smith and seconded by Myles McMorrow Sean Keane of Tipperary Hills was unanimously elected as a Patron. It was certainly fitting that one proud Tipperary man should be succeeded by another and Sean’s record in Pitch & Putt is second to none with perhaps his recent triumph in assisting the resurrection of Tipperary Hills being his greatest achievement.
There were a total of 63 motions and 14 recommendations listed for discussion and lively arguments were made on all sides. It is a great tribute to the attendance that the debate although hotly contested was always good natured and much of benefit was achieved. It was after 7.00pm when the debate finally ended.
With all the business of the meeting closed Frank Smith thanked the large attendance and wished all those travelling a safe journey. He extended his hopes that the incoming Officers would have a successful year and thanked all who had helped him in any way over his administrative career.
